Crochet Toddler Hat (free pattern)

Here is another post that I am moving over from my old blog.

Crochet Toddler Hat

There is just something cozy about a handmade crocheted hat. I made this hat for my almost one year old. It is slightly big, but it still fits her (she has a big head, lol). I believe that it would be perfectly sized for a toddler.
For this hat, I chose a sport weight baby yarn that I had left over from a baby blanket that I made. As for the pom-pom, Well, I had some leftover yarn from the trim of the same blanket, and pom-poms are fun, so I just had to use it for this.

You need:

Sport weight Baby Yarn
Size G (4.25 mm) Crochet hook

(HDC= half double crochet)

Instructions:
Working in back loop,
changing from HDC to SC

Ch. 41
Row 1: SC in second chain from hook. SC in next 9 CH, HDC in next 30 CH. Turn.
Row 2: CH 2, HDC 30 in back loop only, SC 10 in back loop only. Turn.
Row 3: CH 1, SC10 back loop only, HDC 30 back loop only. Turn.
Rows 4-53: Repeat rows 2 and 3 25 times. Do not finish off.

After working a few rows.
See how the SC end is smaller?
Finishing:

CH 1, fold in half so that both ends are together. Working through the back loop of the worked stitch and through the back side of the foundation chain, slip stitch across. Finish off.

Cut a double thickness of yarn, about 24 inches long. Weave through the top (smaller) edge of the hat, working with the wrong side. Pull tight and tie off. Weave in ends.

Optional:

Join a second color to the bottom edge of the hat and SC evenly across. Finish off and weave in ends.
Make a pom-pom and attach it to the top.

  4. Just found you via "Laying it all out" site. They featured your Granny Stripes Color-Burst Blanket. In looking around your site I found the "Newborn Football Hat and Booties Set". I'm going to make this set for my neighbors who are going to have a baby boy at the end of this month.
I like the looks of your patterns.
BTW - I do have a question regarding your Sunflower Sun Hat. The hat has 15 rounds. You have the petals starting on round 14 of the hat. Does that mean that we crochet around round 15?

    1. Hi Janet! Thanks so much for stopping by and for your sweet comment!
The Sunflower Sun Hat- yes. I found that the petals were able to stick out a bit more if crocheted around round 15. :-)
