Last week, I shared with you my idea of what I should have done with my weekly crochet squares. This week, I am putting that into motion.
If you are looking to learn the basic crochet stitches, these next few weeks are for you! Today, I will focus on just the basic single crochet. Just one square should be enough practice for you to get the stitch down fairly comfortably. Once you have this and the other basic stitches (half double crochet, double crochet, & treble crochet) down, you will be ready to tackle almost any crochet pattern. The squares following the basics (along with the squares that have preceded this post) will show you different ways to use these stitches to make various effects.
Let's get started.
Single Crochet Square
What You Need:
Size K crochet hook
Worsted weight yarn
Stitch Abbreviations:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
yo = yarn over (put the yarn over the hook)
Getting Started:
Making a chain: Make a slip knot in your yarn, leaving a small loop. Insert the crochet hook into the loop. Yarn over (yo) and pull the yarn through the loop on the hook, dropping that loop and creating a new loop on the hook with the yarn you just pulled through. This is one chain.
Continue to make a chain by yo and pulling through.
Making a single crochet (sc): In a chain stitch, insert the hook through one strand of a chain stitch; in a sc (or other stitch) insert the hook in the top 2 strands of the stitch. Once the hook is inserted, yo and pull a loop through the stitch and through the loop that is already on the hook. You will now have 1 loop on the hook and you have just made a single crochet.
Finishing off: To finish off, you simply make a ch, pulling the loop long. Snip the loop in the middle and pull it tight. You can weave in the end.
What You Do:
Ch 22
Row 1: Sc in the second ch from the hook and in each ch across. Turn. (I usually put your stitch count in parenthesis here) (21)
Rows 2-22: Ch 1, sc in each stitch across. Turn. (21)
Finish off.
