Little Crochet Purse (free pattern)

I made a little purple crochet purse for my 7 year old, for her birthday.

My 4 year old will soon be turning 5, so I asked her what she wants for her birthday. She told me that she wants a purse just like the one that her sister got.
That made me smile.

Here's a sneak peek!

I used a smaller hook for the green purse, and I honestly can't remember what size I used for the purple one. I suppose it doesn't matter either way, though. You can really use any size hook for this pattern.

  3. A great pattern! I think it could use a flower applique of two though.

  5. How do you Pivot? Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Sue. To pivot, you "turn" the work, (like a steering wheel) to work down the side, instead of turning it as you would to work another row. I hope this makes sense to you. If not, let me know and I will try to explain it better. :-)

    2. So, if you are working across the front of the work, and you pivot it, you will be working down the side, with the front still facing you. :-)

  8. On the body what does rows 15 and 24 mean? What do you do when it says about back loop and front loop???

    1. Hi! When you work the front loop only or the back loop only, this means that when you insert your hook, you just insert it into the loop indicated, instead of inserting it through both loops like you normally do.
This is difficult to explain in words, without showing you. Hmmm....
      Maybe this will help: http://crochet.about.com/library/blbackfrontloop.htm

  9. I love this pattern and I'm almost finished but I was wondering how to put the purse all together after I've finished putting the sides on and finish the strap. I didn't see this in the directions unless I overlooked it.

    1. Hi!
I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Sorry!
The body of the purse and the "flap" are all made in one piece, so once you attach the sides and the strap, you should be finished (well, except for the button).
I hope that helps. Of not, feel free to contact me by clicking on the Contact Me tab on the left. :-)

  10. Im lost with what pivot work means?

    1. Hi! So sorry for the confusion! It means to turn the work, so that you are now working down the side. (Like turning it like a steering wheel as opposed to flipping it around completely like you normally do when you turn a row.) I hope that clears it up a bit.

I did make a little pic on my legwarmer pattern to try to explain it a bit. Here's the link, if you would like to take a peek. It's the same idea. :-)

  11. I taught myself to crochet three weeks ago to make Christmas gifts. I found this pattern and made one for my five year old sister-in-law. Though I'm sure I made a few mistakes, it looks great! The pattern was very easy to follow. I used a few different colors in funfetti yarn and the result is a fuzzy block-colored purse. I cannot wait to give it to her. Thank you!

  13. I found this pattern on 4/21/2013. I have made it twice. My question is how wide is the body suppose to be? The 1st time I made it, the body ended up being 8 1/4 inches wide and the 2nd time body was 9 inches wide. Either way my Granddaughters will love the purses. But the way I'm going I can give these to my Daughters and the purses will be big enough for them. I made the chain of 29 and then did the 28 single crochet stitches.

    1. Hi Susan. I haven't actually measured the purse. 8-9 inches does sound about right, though. I wanted to make them big enough for my girls to put a few of their toys in them. :-)
I am guessing that the difference in your sizes are due to crocheting tighter on one and looser on the other? Or possibly a different weight in yarn?
      I hope that helps! :-)

    2. Yes it does. But my Granddaughters will love the purses no matter what. As a matter of fact so does everyone I have showed them to. The 1st one I did, I used multicolored yarn and the 2nd one a bright yellow. Thanks for your pattern. It's the first thing that I have made that had separate pieces to put together. Your directions was so clear on how-to do. thanks for making me feel like a "Pro". Have a good day and A Happy Mother's Day.

  15. I noticed the purse flap is curling up at the edge try a small amount of PVA glues or iron interface also edging could be worked on the wrong side which pull the tension back into line for the edges
